Castlebar is the county town of Mayo. Castlebar has a primary catchment of 35,000 people and is second only to Galway city as a retail centre in Connaught.

It is the largest town in Mayo by population, with excellent schools and sporting bodies such as Castlebar Mitchels, Castlebar Rugby Club, Castlebar Celtic and Castlebar Tennis club, all well known throughout the country. A thriving arts community is centred at the Linenhall Arts Centre opposite our office. The town boasts a rich history going as far back to the towns origins when it was settled by the Norman family of De Barry back in the 1200’s, famous historic events also include the 1798 races of Castlebar. Historical figures include Margaret Burke Sheridan, Ernie O’Malley and Louis Brennan.

Local amenities include the Mayo campus of GMIT, Mayo General Hospital and the Museum of Country Life just outside the town and the county Library. The town is linked by railway to Dublin, Westport and Ballina. The town is surrounded by several villages, with Breaffy and Turlough being the most well known.
